
DARMASISWA is a one-year non-degree scholarship program offered by the Indonesian government to all non-Indonesian citizens from countries which Indonesia has diplomatic relations to study Indonesian language, arts, music, crafts and other specific subjects at 68 Indonesian Higher Institutions selected in various cities in Indonesia. This program is organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture, Research, and Technology in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The DARMASISWA program was started in 1974 as part of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) initiative, admitting only students from ASEAN. However, in 1976 this program was extended to include students from other countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and USA. In early 90’s, this program was extended further to include all countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia. Until to date, the number of countries participating in this program is more than 135 countries.
The main object of the DARMASISWA program is to increase and cultivate interest in Indonesian language and Indonesian culture among citizens from other countries. It is also designed to increase mutual understanding and provide stronger cultural bonds between different nations.

Becoming Darmasiswa students at UNISSULA will be once in lifetime experience. The students will attend intensive Indonesian language course which aims to improve their Indonesian language competence. Participants who take part in the course are expected to have mastery of spoken and written Indonesian which includes four aspects of language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). Darmasiswa students are also encouraged to actively participate on our student
activities club such as wall climbing, pencak silat (Indonesian martial arts) and Rebana Club. Aside of that, Darmasiswa students will also have the opportunity to get directly involved and participate in cultural activities such as learning traditional dances and playing traditional music as well as visiting historical tourist attractions.

Semarang used to be the hub for international trading back in the 16th century. As well as a place where worldwide culture blended in, from Chinese, Indian, Arab, to European. With that historical record, the is now known as a city with multicultural harmony. The program was fun because we were able to meet new peers from within and outside our country of origin. We learned a lot about Indonesia as a whole.
My expectations were met. In terms of teaching, I can say that they are effective because I have learned a lot. The materials were very helpful and detailed.
